Qormi 2 v Marsaxlokk 2

Without the services of several players namely Deanov, Galabov, Brincat, Sciberras and Spiteri, Marsaxlokk managed a draw that was much needed for them to play in the Championship Pool as from next weekend.

Qormi had plans to win with four goals or more to secure a Championship Pool berth but their first plan did not function well as their opponents Marsaxlokk had other ideas. The Southseasiders, with an almost perfect tactical plan imposed by coach Curmi (4-1-3-2) held Michael Mifsud and co. in an entertaining match played in front of a large crowd in Kordin.

The game was really a hot encounter as Referee Azzopardi had to show no less than nine yellow cards and one red card.

Marsaxlokk’s defenders Carlo Mamo and Yanchev were solid as a rock at the back and kept Souza Santos, Michael Mifsud and Osagie at bay for most of the time.

Qormi opted for a 4-1-3-2 line up with Mifsud and Souza up front but the two did not shine. With this 2-2 draw Marsaxlokk play in the Championship Pool along with Hamrun (the latter winning 3-2 against Vittoriosa) whilst Qormi join Sliema, Hibs and Vittoriosa in the Relegation zone.

The disappointment amongst the Qormi fans and technical staff was evident, whilst on the other side hugs, kisses and joy amongst the Marsaxlokk fans and players.

First Half

7min. Alfred Effiong face to face with Qormi keeper Farrugia after a through ball by Ryan Darmanin. Farrugia saves as he keeps steady on his feet.

14min. Bello Osagie’s low cross from the left is intercepted by Marsaxlokk keeper Gauci.

22min. Qormi 1-0. A long high cross by Jonathan Bondin proved to be fatal for Gauci as he is beaten.

38min. Mifsud floors Gauci as he dribbles him and nets the ball but he is ruled off side.

Second Half:

No substitutions affected. With the results at Half time (Sliema winning 2-0 vs Hibs, Qormi winning 1-0 v Marsaxlokk and Hamrun winning 1-0 v Vittoriosa) a decider between Qormi and Marsaxlokk would be needed to determine who will avoid the Relegation Pool. With these results at Half Time Hamrun play with the top six, Sliema last four.

66min. Matthew Farrugia is shown the red card after he fouls Effiong inside the penalty area. Penalty is awarded to Marsaxlokk by Referee Azzopardi

69min. Matthew Camilleri replaces Farrugia as Souza Santos is substituted.

70min. Marsaxlokk 1-1. Substitute Guerrero beats Camilleri.

86min. Stefan Giglio sees his strike from outside the area hit the crossbar and down on the line.

92min. Qormi 2-1 Joseph Farrugia with a fine half volley strike to send the yellow black fans in a festive mood.

94min. Marsaxlokk 2-2. The Qormi jubilation lasted only few seconds as the Blues managed to level the score and secure a top six placing when substitute Alcorse flicked in the net from a rebound. Protests followed after this goal for an alleged off side.
