Qormi upfront after narrow win

Rabat   0   Qormi   1

The game got under way with Rabat forcing a penalty corner in the first minute, but their effort was parried away by Qormi’s goalkeeper.   Although Qormi enjoyed territorial advantage from then on Rabat gave nothing away with their defence well marshalled under pressure.  Qormi won five penalty corners from the 11th minute onwards but they did not manage to take advantage and open their tally.  In the 33rd minute they were awarded yet another penalty corner but Matthew Buhagiar cleared brilliantly off the fatal line to keep Rabat’s goal intact.   The score line remained unopened as the half time whistle blew.

Rabat started the second half in a more offensive mode and on 45 minutes did not take advantage of two penalty corners awarded to them in quick succession.  The tempo of the game increased and in the 52ndminute a Julian Aquilina cross was met by Joseph Cuschieri who netted to give Qormi a one goal lead.   Rabat’s reaction was immediate, pressing hard for an equalizer.   They finished the game on the attack with Qormi defending their slender lead and were unlucky not to score themselves.   In fact, just before the end of the match Ramon Chircop saved the day for Qormi when he managed to push away a shot from close range following a melee in front of his posts.   This victory now gives Qormi a four point lead in the table as unfortunately the second much awaited match between Hotsticks and Young Stars had to be abandoned in the 25th minute due to very adverse weather conditions.
