Local international basketball referee Bernard Vassallo will be once again in action next week in the European sphere after receiving a prestigious FIBA nomination to be one of the referees selected for the FIBA Euroleague ELW Final 8 2013 Championships to be played in Ekaterinburg, Russia between Monday 18th and Sunday 24th March.

This is another first for a local basketball referee and follow Vassallo’s previous highlights of the 2006 Commonwealth Games Final in Australia, the 2010 European Under 20 Championships in Serbia and the 2011 Eurobasket Finals in Poland.

The teams qualified for the Final 8 Championships are hosts Ekaterinburg and Spartak Moscow from Russia, Bourges (France), Schio (Italy), Kosice (Slovakia), Polkowice (Poland) and Galatasaray and Fenerbache (Turkey).

Vassallo is one of fifteen referees selected for these finals where the teams are divided into two respective four-team groups. Following a round robin round, the top two placed teams will progress to the semifinals. All the games will be played in the Divs Arena in Ekaterinburg.

It’s a real pity that in Malta we get nowhere close to the games he refs abroad as he is hardly ever assigned any games locally.
Such a person with so much international experience would definitely be good for the local game too and would help other refs improve
