PPACS – Pre-Participation Athlete Cardiac Screening programme

PSMC and the ASA are pleased to launch PPaCs – Pre-Participation Athlete Cardiac Screening Programme – the latest product from PSMC.

PSMC and ASA have a long-standing partnership in the field of optimisation of health care of aquatic athletes. PPaCs offers high performing athletes such as water polo players and swimmers to be screened in accordance with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Consensus Statement on pre-participation screening of young athletes (aged 14 – 35 years).

The intention of the programme is to encourage active and healthy participation of athletes in sports that require an above a
verage intensity; to provide positive support to the athletes themselves, and also to their coaches, parents and club officials. The ASA shall be setting the good practice example by ensuring that all the athletes competing for the Swimming and Water Polo National teams be screened.

PPaCs shall be launched on Thursday 24th January 2019 at 16:30hrs in the IPES Hall, South Block, Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex and shall be addressed by Mr Joe Caruana Curran, ASA President, Dr John Xerri de Caro, Managing Partner, PSMC and Dr Mark Abela Cardiology Higher Specialist Trainee.

DR JOHN XERRI DE CARO B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc. (Manch.), PhD (Sheff.) MMAP Co-founder and Managing Partner of PSMC – a Maltese partnership set up and designed to provide quality services within the fields of sports medicine, physiotherapy, exercise and general health. The mission of PSMC is to bring the best standards in the care of athletes and sports persons to the whole population because athletes and sports persons should only expect services that match the current best standards in the management of sport related health, whether it is in prevention or cure. John has a long and positive history in the field of Sports Injuries and Therapy -since 1998 synonymous with water polo. He is a full-time resident academic at the University of Malta leading a number of research projects among which in the field of sports injuries and in particular shoulder injuries. Since 2013 PSMC has been providing sports medicine and physiotherapy services dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of all sports and muscular skeletal injuries to the athletes of the ASA.

DR MARK ABELA MD, MRCP (UK), MRCP (Lond.), M.Sc. (Edin.) Cardiology Higher Specialist Trainee at Mater Dei Hospital. His main academic and clinical interests are in cardiac screening in athletic individuals, sports cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation. He was the lead investigator in the latest national cardiac screening project BEAT-IT. He is a University of Malta Graduate, having obtained his MD in 2011. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London and is also an MSc Graduate from the University of Edinburgh. At present, he is reading for an MSc degree in Sports Cardiology with St George’s University, working hand in hand with a number of internationally renowned sports cardiologists. He has presented at a number of local and international conferences and also has a number of papers in international journals.
