The battle for third place may boil down to a decider

Qormi FC managed to win their first game since the departure of their former coach Jesmond Zerafa as on Tuesday evening they inflicted a 3-0 victory on Sliema. A win that materialised in the second half when after the hour mark, Referee Marco Borg awarded a very dubious penalty to Qormi. This was the last Premier League match for both teams who finished the league in third position with 30 points each behind Valletta  and champions Birkirkara.

The goals for Qormi came in the 60th minute from a Camillo Sanvezzo Da Silva penalty, in the 79th minute Joseph Farrugia made it 2-0 while Stefan Giglio sealed the affair in the 88th minute.

In the eventuality that Valletta win the FA Trophy, a decider would need to be played to determine whether Qormi or Sliema will get the remaining UEFA Europa League berth. This is because Valletta have already secured a participation in Europa League since they finished second in the league, but they can play immediately in the second round of this competition should they manage to win the coveted FA Trophy.

Matters will be further complicated if either Hamrun or Tarxien Rainbows (the other FA Trophy semi finalists together with Valletta and Qormi) will win this second most prestigious competition. These two clubs cannot play in the UEFA Europa League due to the fact that earlier this season they had withdrawn their UEFA status license.

In the first match on Tuesday Tarxien ended their BOV Premier League commitments on a high note as they once again beat Hibs in the Derby of the South  with a narrow 1-0 scoreline which came from a late penalty awarded five minutes from time.

Mario Muscat defended the Hibs goal after missing the last game and all indications were that the game would end with a 0-0 result, but Tarxien’s Calabretta was fouled  by Aaron Xuereb inside the box in the 85th minute. Ryan Grech pushed the ball into the net after Muscat had originally saved the penalty. One must note that with this latest loss, Hibernians have lost all their 2nd round Championship Pool games
