Miljan Popovic, 20, from Montenegro, was charged with punching a man and breaking his tooth after he insulted him in a nightclub in Paceville.

The incident happened on July 7 at around 02.45h. Mr Popovic, who plays for the Sliema water polo team, had been at Sabor when he started being harassed and taunted by a group of men, one of whom was Kurt Galea, who punched him in the cheek. Mr Popovic retaliated with what was considered excessive force, breaking one of Mr Galea’s teeth.

Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi, who represented Mr Galea, said that both parties had fault in the matter and that Mr Popovic’s excessive strength when retaliating was more due to the fact that he was a sportsman than any violent intent.

Mr Popovic, whose contract expires on September 15, was freed and warned not to commit another criminal act for three years.

Mr Galea will also be brought to Court in the coming days.

Prosecution was led by Inspector Luke Bonello. Magistrate Neville Camilleri presided over the case.
