Francesco Pizzo (Meca Team) and Iona Sewell (Squadra Donne UK) are the
overall winners of the 16th edition of the Tour ta’ Malta after both
placing third in the last competitive stage of the Tour held on Saturday
on the Xaghra circuit in Gozo.

Italian riders once again dominated the male category where last year’s
winner Francesco Guccione (Ballatore) took an early lead and kept it
till the end despite the stiff challenge offered by other cyclists. He
managed to increase his lead towards the end of the race to win in one
hour 41 minutes and 6 seconds. Enzo Buccheri (Cicli Buccheri), Friday’s
winner at San Martin, and Francesco Pizzo (Meca Team) offered the
biggest threat to Guccione throughout the race, but in the end, they had
to content themselves with second and third place respectively, both
clocking one hour 41 minutes and 20 seconds. Pizzo was declared overall
winner thanks to an aggregate time of 4 hours 55 minutes and 24 seconds.

The ladies category saw the two Dutch riders, Roos van den Bos and
Claudia Koster from the Noord Holland team, taking an early lead, with
overall leader Iona Sewell (Squadra Donne UK) intent on keeping not far
behind to maintain her overall lead. Van den Bos won the race in 1 hour
13 minutes and 49 seconds, with Koster placing second in 1 hour 14
minutes and 44 seconds. Sewell placed third a full minute behind Van den
Bos and five seconds behind Koster, but it was enough for her to keep
the overall lead and be declared winner of the Tour in an aggregate time
of 4 hours 7 minutes and 48 seconds.

At the end of the stage, prizes were presented by Mr Tony Borg from the
Gozo Ministry, Mr Joe Cordina, Mayor of Xaghra, and Mr Joe Bajada, the
Malta Sports Council’s coordinator for Gozo. The Tour ta’ Malta
Organising Committee would like to thank the Xaghra residents for their
full cooperation towards the success of the Tour’s third stage.
