Pembroke Athleta Under 16 girls in Cardiff

Monday, August 8, 2011, 10:25

From Saturday 23rd July to 30th July 2011 the Pembroke Atleta Under 16 girls were in Cardiff for a training camp where a full games programme  was prepared to give as much playing time as possible  to the girls, this included besides participation in the Welsh Super Cup Tournament, friendly matches and a triangular tournament. In all our Girls played 10 games,  11 –a-side,  in the space of  5 days.  They won five matches, drawing 2 and losing 3.

Duration of the games varied as follows:

Friendly Monday  - 70mins

Triangular Tournament – Tuesday  - 60mins

Super Cup Tournament- Thursday/Friday -  30mins/ 40mins

Unfortunately the group consisted of only 13 girls who could make the trip and this made it impossible to give adequate rest to the girls due to lack of substitutes.  To make matters worse some girls were injured and other unwell which obviously had to be rested and thus the Coach at times found it difficult to field even 11 players.

However with the  full dedication of the players  and coaches all matches except the Wednesday friendly  which had to be cancelled for the above reasons, were honoured and played in the best of spirits and at  high level of play as the results show.

Results & some comments on the matches played:

Monday –   Friendly    Game                            vs    GARDEN VILLAGE          -    Result          4 – 1
Good beginning. Our Girls improved after being a goal down and settled own quickly to finish superior to

our opponents

Tuesday- Triangular Tournament-                   vs     KAAPO                                -   Result           0 – 0
This was a very interesting  game against a Finish Under 18 team who participated in the Women open of the tournament. Probably  the best game played.
                                                                          vs      CIMLA                                –   Result             8 -1
Winners of this tournament was our Nursery, Pembroke Athleta F.N.  Opposition was very good  to weak.

                                                                          vs      GLASGOW GIRLS             -    Result            0 – 4
We finished 3rd and qualified for the 2nd phase (Semi-finals)  – winning 2 games losing 2 games
Friday – Super Cup  – 2nd phase-Semi-final     vs      MARDY TIGERS                -   Result           0 – 3
Challenge Cup                                                  vs        VILLA DINO                      -   Result          4 – 1
                                                                          Vs        LEMURS                           -    Result          0 – 0
Finished joint winners however Lemurs had better goal –average

All in  all considering the injuries to key players in the team and the limited number of players available the results were very satisfactory and the standard of play very good.  We found it a bit hard against the ‘Mardy Tigers’ team eventual winner of the Welsh Super Cup Tournament as these were physically & athletically superior to our girls but I am sure if we were to play them with our best 11  the game will be much more balanced.

As mentioned above the benefits of this trip for the Girls are enormous and will definitely serve them for their commitments in the MFA Under 16 and 1st Division leagues this Season.

Although we had a full programme of games we also found time to tour the ‘ Millennium Stadium’, the Famous ‘ Cardiff Castle’ , were invited and entertained by the City’s Honourary Consul Sir Brooke Boothby to his home ‘Fonmon  Castle’ which has a long cherished history and where the kids together with the Melita & Hamrun Boys had a wonderful evening in a organised treasure hunt

On the way back from Cardiff we managed also to find some time to stay for a few hours in London where we toured the Big Ben area.

The organisation of the Football Tournament was very good although there are some areas which can be improved upon i.e. schedule of games to be notified earlier, rules explained better.  One has to consider also that the organisers moved the event from Aberyswyth to Cardiff and this was the first event there.

The behaviour of the Girls was exemplary and the team work of the Officials of the Group and Coaches was excellent which encourages our Nursery to organise another such trip in the near future.

We also hope that this first venture by a Maltese Football  Nursery will be followed by other Nurseries for the benefit and continual promotion of Women Football in Malta
