Last Saturday, champions Paola Hibs Candy retained the Super Cup with a 3-1 win over their rivals Flyers Depiro. The first set was a walk in the park for the champions, winning it convincingly 25-14 and with the Depiro side in disarray, but Depiro reacted in the second set, making it harder for Paolites to bring home the points. In this set Depiro’s defence functioned better and the team committed less mistakes but Paola still took the set 25-20.

Spurred on by their performance in the second set Depiro were more convincing in the third set, as some complacency set in the Paola ranks, taking it 25-21 and setting the stage for an exciting fourth set. Paola regained their composure and imposed their game in what proved to be the final set, taking it 25-20 and raising the Cup much to the delight of their dedicated fans.

In another game on Saturday from the Women’s first division, the Playvolley derby took place with Toyota Playvolley beating their sister team Playvolley Galaxy 3-0. Unexpectedly, the first set was a close fought one with Toyota winning it 27-25, only to annihilate the Galaxy 25-5 in the second. Things were a bit more interesting in the third set which went Toyota’s way 25-19.

Paola’s Under18 youngsters beat Qormi in their Women’s second division match with a 3-0 scoreline (25-22, 25-16, 25-22).

On Sunday Defenders Aloysians managed to win by the slimmest of margins against Sliema who were coming from two consecutive walk overs in the Men’s League. Aloysians could not find the continuity in their game and were very erratic at time, allowing their less quoted opponents back into the match, but they won the match 3-2 ( 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, 15-13) and took the three points home to remain at the top spot with Valletta and Fleur de Lys.

Valletta San Antonio kept the pace with the leaders by beating Iklin 3-0 in convincing fashion. In the first two sets Iklin could not keep up with Valletta’s attacking options succumbing to the score of 25-11 and 25-6. Iklin settled into the game in the third set, but Valletta still won it 25-14.

The last game in the Men’s League last weekend saw Fleur-de-Lys overcome a valid Attard Tenovar team with a 3-1 scoreline. The first two sets saw Fleur-de-Lys winning with a handful of points, 25-21 and 28-26. Attard were back in the match in the third set, winning it 28-26 but their batteries went flat in the fourth set as they lost it heavily 25-12.
