Paola Hibs - 2010/11 Women's First Division champions

Paola Hibs once again confirmed their superiority in women’s volleyball when they beat Depiro Flyers in the First Division league decider to take their eighth consecutive championship. Both teams had one a game each against each other this season. This latest success completes the Paolites’ clean sweep for the 2010/11 season as they also cruised to victory in the Super Cup and the Tony Parnis National Cup.

Last weekend’s decider was yet another epic encounter between the two top women’s volleyball teams in Malta, with Flyers applying the pressure early in the match. But Paola’s experience started paying off as they improved their service and attack to take the first set.

Flyers bounced back in the second set and with their aggressive service they managed to put Paola’s receivers in considerable difficulty thus not allowing them to attack with their full force. This allowed Flyers to take the upper hand and win the second set and level the game at one set apiece.

Paola were quick to remedy the situation, settling down in defence and service reception. The champions wasted no time to wrap up the third set thanks to mosre positive attacks and with the score reading 2-1 in their favour the title was within sight.

Flyers were in no mood to allow this opportunity to win their first ever league title slip away and in the fourth set they kept the pace with the champions and also managed to slip past them at the end to take the fourth set and set up a fifth set showdown.

Paola showed their true colours when it mattered, and in the fifth set, all their experience was evident as they kept the pressure on Flyers and won this set that crowned them champions, a title that they have held onto since the 2003/04 season.

Well done to both teams. The league would be much more attractive and interesting if all games were to be like the final game, however I would like to point out from the above comment that the battlei s till the end. Flyers’ 1st win was so close yet so far! It is much more difficult to keep the title than to win it for the first time, even more after all these years and not just for a year or two. And without excluding the fact that this team has won all the cups during this season, and lost only one match!!

well done to the winners, but we are proud of our season, giving paola a very hard time in all three league games and going down only in the decisive fifth set of the decider for the league championship. we are proud to play at their level in tight and thrilling games against them and that we were so close to win our first seniors title in our history.
