Maltese Champions Poala Hibs, as expected, succumbed to a stronger Azerrail Baku side in their GM Capital Challenge Cup debut last weekend with a 0-3 scoreline. The set scores were as follows: 7:25, 6:25, 10:25. One must keep in mind that the Azerbaijanis are a professional team and were superior both tactically and physically.

Before the match, club president Carmen Gauci, explained that Paola have ventured into European volleyball competitions following their domination of the local scene for the past 7 seasons, to enable their players to have new challenges. Gauci explained that the CEV does not give any financial assistance to clubs for participating in such competitions and therefore the local champions had to bear the financial burden themselves.

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport Clyde Puli has promised to assist Paola Hibs in this venture through the Kunsill Malti għall-Isport and also hoped that more local volleyball clubs will take the bold step to compete in Continental volleyball competitions just like Paola did.

Later this week the Hibs contingent will be traveling to Azerbaijan to play the return leg of this 1st Round tie and sportinmalta.com will be bringing you the latest news from this game too.
