Paola Hibs Candy, who were busy playing European volleyball over the past weeks, have started off their season on the right foot with a 3-0 victory over Toyota Playvolley in the women’s first division league. The more experienced Paola side was always in control, although the result remains a respectable one for Playvolley with set scores reading 25-18, 25-20 and 25-19 in the Paolites’ favour. Paola will next Saturday defend the Super Cup against their main rivals Flyers Depiro.

In the women’s second division, Birkirkara bounced back from last week’s final set loss to TGIF by beating the young Paola Under18 team. The latter are gaining useful experience in the senior categories while Birkirkara needed the three points to be able to keep the pace with Qormi and Flyers II at the top. The final score was 3-0 in Birkirkara’s favour (25-19, 25-17, 25-18).

The leaders of the women’s second division, Flyers Depiro II, dropped a set en route to beating Southend 2 to take the three points at stake and keeping a clean sheet in their first three games of the season. Flyers started strongly, winning the first set 25-20, but a comeback by Southend enabled them to level the score following a very tightly fought second set that ended 26-24 in favour of the Southsiders. But their success was short lived as Flyers improved their game, winning the next two sets with the comfortable scorelines of 25-17 and 25-14.
