Paola and Valletta win Fr. Tony Parnis National Cup

History repeated itself this year as Paola Hibs Candy and Valletta San Antonio held on to the Fr Tony Parnis National Cup in the female and male categories respectively, as they won their best out of three games finals.

Last weekend’s Cup success was the eight in a row for Paola who, as the scores demonstrate, found little opposition from Flyers Depiro. In their first encounter on Saturday, Paola won with a straight sets victory (25-15, 25-22, 25-21) while in their second game they dropped the first set 18-25, but then piled on the pressure to trash their opponents 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 in the last three sets.

The Poalites could rely on their strong serving and tactical discipline to beat their opponents, although Flyers had a positive run through their middle spikers to take the first set in the second game on Sunday. But Flyers could not maintain the momentum and as Paola’s attacking machine revved up, there was little that they could do, succumbing heavily to their opponents in the final three sets.

In the Males’ Cup final, surprise package Attard Tenovar faced Valletta San Antonio, after the former beat their more quoted opponents, Defenders Aloysians in the semifinal a week earlier. Valletta won both finals in straight sets to bring this title to the capital for the third successive year.

This final series came hot on the heels of Valletta’s training camp in Milan earlier in the week, and the team played a speedy game with tactical attack combinations, using their middle and outside spikers. Attard gave Valletta a good run for their money in various parts of the matches although Valletta’s positive result never looked threatened.

Both games had a similar storyline with the Citizens building an advantage in each set only to allow Attard back in due to service errors and and inconsistent service reception. But Valletta could rely on their strong attackers to bring in the points together with their high block which proved to be the differentiators between both teams, particularity through Balzan, Caruana, Chetcuti and Tonna. It was positive to note that all of Valletta’s 12 players played a part in this success.

Final scores:
Valletta San Antonio vs Attard Tenovar
Game 1: 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-18)
Game 2: 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 26-24)

Playing tomorrow:
1:30pm Senior Women 1st Div FLEUR-DE-LYS vs FLYERS DEPIRO

It is very easy to say that Paola win because there is no opposition. Paola superiority arises from hard work , strong training and motivated players, not from weak opposition. Food for thought………

  2. opponents says:

ladies scores on saturday (25-15, 25-22, 25-21) and saying
‘little opposition’ is not the real picture for the first game. but
it is evident that someone preferred to emphasise only on the last
three sets of the sunday game.

U leeeee. Il Hibs bla opposizzjoni ghalhekk kellom jilghabu barra. 8 snin ilhom ikissru lil kullhadd u jirbhu kull tazza li hawn … l-opponents taghhom m’ghandhomx il grinta biex jirbhulhom ghax malli jigu kontrihom dejjem ifallu. U din is-sena il hibs minghajr barranin qed jilghabu jigifieri zgur m’hemmx skuzi bhas-snin ta qabel. Prosit blacks ibqghu ghamlulna proud.
