Thirteen yachts started the Raymarine Double Handed Figure of Eight Race in Marsamxett Harbour on Saturday 3rd December.

The wind was very light from the south west as the first group got under way at 08:30hrs. This was the IRC Class 2 group. Colourful downwind sails soon filled and the fleet sailed out from Marsamxett closely followed by the IRC Class 1 yachts.

Flat water and fair breeze soon had the yachts turning the Munxar cardinal mark with the IRC Class 1 yachts taking the lead on the fetch to Filfla. The wind picked up and soon the whole fleet was progressing at an average 7 to 8 knots.  Sailing to the lee of Gozo progress slowed slightly. Lead positions were changing and it was too close to call the leader.

Otra Vez, who were second to Elusive II on the approach to Tigne, chose an offshore route and crossed the finish line at the harbour mouth just 21 seconds ahead. They were closely followed by Xpresso and TonTon.  The wind just died after that leaving the IRC Class 2 yachts struggling to finish. Fast Forward was the first to finish, however it was Lartista who took first place on corrected time.

A Prize Giving Ceremony took place at the Royal Malta Yacht Club
