Prolific striker Joseph Okonkwo who last year figured for Dingli Swallows in the BOV Premier League is close to signing for Valletta FC. Reports that have reached the sportinmalta.com newsroom indicate that this move is being facilitated by ex-Dingli coach Jesmond Zammit who is now the new team manager at Valletta.

In the mean time, national teams’ manager Ivan Vella has not joined the National ‘A’ side on their one week training camp in Italy. Rumours have it that Vella is busy building up support for MFA president Dr. Joe Mifsud in the latter’s bid to retain his post during next month’s MFA Annual General meeting.

In all, a group of 21 players have travelled to Italy under the charge of coach John Buttigieg and assistant coach Carmel Busuttil as they prepare for their first competitive commitments in the Euro 2012 Group F qualifying matches during the first week of September. Malta will play against Israel away on the 3rd September and Latvia at Ta’ Qali National Stadium four days later.
