Ramis, Fina tied for top spot after matching victories

Long time Division I leaders and defending champions okmalta.com, were toppled from the top spot in week twelve of the MSV Life National League as they could only manage a 4 – 4 draw against St. James Hospital, while chasers Ramis and Fina overtook them thanks to a pair of 100% victories against Supreme and J Grima & Co respectively. Ramis are now top on pinfall, although tied with Fina on 74 points ahead of okmalta.com on 72. In other matches, Rogantino’s took all eight against The Clan, while MIA came out on the better end of a 2 – 6 score line against Turu’s Knights in their bid for survival.

Current league champions okmalta.com seem to be lacking some of their round one consistency since round two got underway in week ten, and a four-all draw against St’ James Hospital in week twelve saw them tumble to third place, as other results also went against them. They managed to take the early lead in spite of a low 679 effort, which was still four better than their opponents’ 675 game score. St. James then levelled matters by taking game two 768 – 801, for a slim series advantage of 29 pins going into game the last of the set. Both teams shot their best of their night in game three which was another close one, falling to okmalta.com by just seven pins (832 – 825), which meant St. James Hospital claimed the series to force the draw. Mauro Anastasi (okmalta.com), 603. Bertram Vella (St. James Hospital), 567.

Ramis were first to take advantage of okmalta.com’s misfortunes, replacing them at the top of the table after their 8 – 0 pummelling of relegation favourites, Supreme. Ramis opened with a four-man, 854 broadside against a 696 from Supreme to lead after game one, and then made it 4 – 0 with an 807 – 691 game two win. With a cushion of 274 pins after two, the match was surely in the bag, but Ramis then made sure of all eight, and the top spot with a 761 – 726 final victory. Mark Spiteri (Ramis, 632. Tony Paris (Supreme), 553.

Fina are level for first place with Ramis after beating J Grima & Sons in the second whitewash of the evening, but are down in second place due to their lower season pinfall. The Fina victory came against J Grima & Co, who are currently seventh and twelve points clear of the drop zone. Fina embarked on what would be the team series of the week (2452) with an unimpressive 639 – 721 opening win, but then cranked their game up by a gear or two to take the second of the series 704 – 870 do double their lead. All four of the Fina aces went 200+ in game three for a 766 – 861 finale, which rounded off a 659 series for top man Kenneth Arpa (male bowler of the week). Manwel Saliba (J Grima & Co), 554.

Rogantino’s ascension through the Div I classification continues, as they claimed a convincing 0 – 8 victory over sixth side The Clan this week, to displace Turu’s Knights in fourth place. The eventual winners never look too uncomfortable aver the three-set, taking game one 730 – 778, and then going four up with a 725 – 781 game two win. Both teams’ pace dropped in game three, which Rogantino’s won 686 – 738 for the full point win. Joe Cassar (Rogantino’s), 593. Matthew Cossai (The Clan), 538.

MIA are still five points shy of Div I survival down in ninth place, but netted a handy 2 – 6 win against Turu’s Knights in week twelve, with a further 48 points still up for grabs in the six remaining weeks leading up the season’s end. It was a scrappy affair, with the Knights in particular seeming out of sorts, in spite of drawing first blood with a tense but low 679 – 675 opening victory. Game two wasn’t a lot better, but saw MIA make it two all thanks to their 657 – 691 equalizing win. The latter then clinched the final game 709 – 729, taking the series points by seventeen pins, for the match (2061 – 2078).
