Fina take all eight to gain further ground

Division I leaders okmalta.com managed to further stretch their advantage to twelve points in week fourteen of the MSV Life National League, thanks to a combination of their 8 – 0 thrashing of The Clan, and a 6 – 2 defeat for chasers Ramis at the hands of Salitos. Fina took the opportunity to move closer to the top two with an 8 – 0 demolition of Gladiators, while in other matches there were matching six point wins for Royal Shock against Turu’s Knights, and Grolsch over Middlesea Insurance in this week’s table-bottom clash.

With four weeks remaining, there are still 32 match points up for grabs till the end of the second round, but okmalta.com’s now twelve point lead is a substantial one at this stage. They started the scoring in their week fourteen thrashing of The Clan with a massive 889 – 667 game one win, and quickly doubled their advantage with a more sedate 810 – 769 result in the second. The leaders kept up their 800+ form with a final win of 824 – 752 to make sure of all eight points. Neil Sullivan (okmalta.com), 726, male bowler of the week. Philip Gruppetta, 539.

Ramis’ dreams of a title retention took another blow, as they ended up on the wrong end of a 6 – 2 score line in their match against Salitos this week. They did manage the more positive start, going two up with a 703 – 765 opening win, but it was all square after two as Salitos recovered with a narrow 789 – 772 equalizing win. Salitos also took the deciding third game, the 797 – 735 game score enough to hand them the series points by a 17 pin margin (2289 – 2272). Andre Grech (Salitos), 572. Fay Falzon Reale (Ramis), 631.

Third placed Fina took full value out of Ramis’ poor showing, winning their match against eighth placed Gladiators 8 – 0 to move within eight points of second place. Game one was the closest of the set, but Fina were still 31 points better (716 – 685) for the early lead, and then made it 4 – 0 in much more convincing style with an 826 – 723 win in game two. They went on to complete the whitewash with a 798 – 736 win in the last of the series. Mark Muscat (Fina), 654. James Gauci Borda (Gladiators), 549.

Royal Shock are still in fourth place, and were 2 – 6 winners against seventh team Turu’s Knights in week fourteen in spite of having to utilize a substitute due to line-up problems. The Knights were well below form in game one, losing that 660 – 796, and only improving slightly in game two which also went against them, 722 – 777 to Royal Shock the result. The latter’s pace dipped in the final game, allowing Turu’s to claim their two points by the narrowest possible margin, with a 750 – 759 win. Clive Farrugia (Royal Shock), 621. Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights), 536.

There was also a six point victory for strugglers Grolsch (ninth) against Middlesea Insurance who seem to be destined to hold onto last place till season’s end. Middlesea were first on the scoreboard thanks to an initial 681 – 703 victory, but Grolsch were quick to respond with a 739 – 691 leveller in game two. They then improved to a 798 – 736 game three win for the match. Ramon Stafrace (Grolsch), 540. Cole Cooper (Middlesea Insurance), 537.
