J Grima & Co take all eight against St. James’ Hospital

Ramis and Fina’s joint lead of the MSV Life National League was fated to last only one week, as okmalta.com are now back in the top spot after the week thirteen fixtures at the SuperBowl. The key results were okmalta.com’s 8 – 0 drubbing of Rogantino’s, while Fina met Ramis in a table top clash which would end in a four-all draw. J Grima & Co were the only other top flight team to take all eight points, with St. James Hospital on the losing end, and there was a 6 – 2 result in favour Turu’s Knights against Supreme. The match between MIA and The Clan produced the second 4 – 4 score line of the night.

Okmalta.com bounced back to the top spot after a one week stay in third place, in part thanks to their 8 – 0 victory over Rogantino’s in week thirteen. Game one was poor, but Rogantino’s were the lower of the two to give the defending champions the early lead (703 – 635). Okmalta.com then found their form to take the much second game 830 – 698, and then made sure of all eight with a 784 – 718 result in the final game. Dennis Mercieca (okmalta.com), 630. Joe Cassar (Rogantino’s), 534.

A four-all draw between Fina and Ramis was the other factor that helped okmalta.com regain the league lead, the two teams having shared the top spot after week twelve. The match turned out to be a real epic, as in spite of sharing the spoils, the arch rival teams registered the two highest team series of the season to date. Fina opened with a 921, which is in fact the highest team game this season, against an 847 for Ramis to take the lead. That huge game proved vital as the series continued with a 871 – 886 Ramis equalizer, and the latter went on to also take an incredibly tense game three, 826 – 834. That mammoth opener gave Fina an advantage of 51 on the series, and the equal share of the spoils (2618 – 2567). Mark Spiteri, male bowler of the week once again, rolled a massive 746 series, again only just missing out on another 300-game in the third (214-256-276). Kenneth Arpa (Fina), 698.

J Grima & Co managed a good 8 – 0 victory against St. James Hospital this week, which meant they improved to sixth place, sixteen points above relegation while their unlucky opponents are just a single point clear in eighth place. The eventual winners started well, shooting an 830 – 769 opening win, but the pace slowed in game two, which was closer, finishing 723 – 705 to double their lead. Demoralized by the two losses, Saint James’ could only manage a low 641 in game three, which also went to J Grima & Co for a 729 effort. Sammy Borg (J Grima & Co), 560. Helenio Grech (St. James Hospital), 550.

Turu’s Knights nudged past Rogantino’s into fourth place, thanks to their 6 – 2 week thirteen win over a, sorely named, Supreme side. Supreme are still bottom, and that’s where they look like staying for the duration, but ironically it was they who claimed the early lead, with a 711 – 742 game one win. The Knights were quick to cancel out that advantage with a 769 – 748 leveller in game two, and then took the match with a better 791 – 697 win in the third. The series finished 2271 – 2187 in the Knights’ favour. Ryan Grech (Turu’s Knights), 578. Frans Vella (Supreme), 514.

Week thirteen produced a second draw, in the match between MIA and The Clan. Relegations candidates MIA must surely have thought that a much needed victory was on the cards, as then went ahead with a close 700 – 683 game one win, before making it 4 – 0 with a better 751 – 717 win in game two. MIA were carrying a shaky 51 pin advantage heading into game three, looking for victory, but they lost their bottle at this crucial stage, losing it 675 – 735, meaning The Clan would claim the series by just nine pins (2126 – 2135), and so force the draw. Alfred Pulis (MIA), 519. James Vassallo (The Clan), 515.
