Champions Fina 2nd Div

The MSV Life National League has already whipped through five weeks of the new season, and there are some familiar names currently occupying the top positions. Okmalta.com are first on 36 having dropped only four points from five matches, with champions Fina in second place. Turu’s Knights will be pleased with their third spot, just ahead of perennial heavyweights, Ramis in fourth place. At the other end of the table, newly promoted Blitzkrieg are having a hard time, bottom on just six points.

Week five saw okmalta.com consolidate their lead with an easy full point victory over J Grima & Co.

Neither team impressed in the opening game of the series, but the top team still managed to win it with a 54 pin margin (647 – 701), before a huge improvement to take game two 661 – 798 to go four points ahead. J Grima could almost clawed back a two point share in the last of the set, but just lost out in the 747 – 759 score line, thus handing the 0 – 8 victory to okmalta.com. Mauro Anastasi (okmalta.com), 605, male bowler of the week. Sammy Borg (J Grima & Co) 523.

Reigning champions Fina are still in second place on 30 points, but could only manage a 4 – 4 draw against newly promoted The Clan, this week. Their huge game one victory (650 – 823) proved vital in their eventually carrying off an equal share of the spoils, as the tables turned in game two which fell narrowly to The Clan (764 – 757) to make it two-all, and the latter also clinched game three 801 – 782. Fina held on to the series points by 147 pins to tie on points (2215 – 2362). Sue Abela (Fina), 644, female bowler of the week. Giancarlo Tolu (The Clan), 555.

Turu’s Knights pulled off a 2 – 6 victory against Ramis in week five, leapfrogging their illustrious opponents into second place as a result. It was Ramis who would draw first blood, bagging the opener with a solid 794 – 689 win, but the plucky Knights were quick to respond with a 701 – 765 game two win to draw level.

Game three was to decide the match, and that also went to Turu’s in a 727 – 824 score line, meaning a 2222 – 2278 series that swung the match safely in their direction. Tiziana  arannante (Turu’s Knights), 608. Mark Spiteri (Ramis), 602.

After a run of four straight defeats, bottom side Blitzkrieg registered their best result of the season to date with a 4 – 4 draw with fellow promotes, Malta International Airport, who are back in the top flight after just one season in Division II. MIA were first on the scoreboard thanks to an extremely tight 716 – 714 initial

win, and then made it 4 – 0 with a better 747 – 698 win in game two. That meant a reachable 51 pins advantage for MIA as game three rolled off, and that went 686 – 746 to Blitzkrieg, meaning they clinched the draw against all odds (2149 – 2158 series). Steve Cassar (MIA), 557. Paul Mallia (Blitzkrieg), 527.

Bowlers on Strike Are currently fifth, and bagged an eight-pointer against Royal Shock this week. The match was generally nothing to write home about, with BoS taking the early lead with a 749 – 671 in game one, followed by a closer 716 – 683 win in game two to go 4 – 0 ahead. Game three was a thriller, with Royal Shock trying to claw something back from the encounter, but it was not to be in the end as Bowlers on Strike stole it 692 – 688 to seal all eight points. Liliana Said (Bowlers on Strike), 525.
