Sliema paired against San Giljan in Group A while Neptunes face Sirens

by Gerald Fenech

Sliema McDonalds will face San Giljan Giuseppe’s, 3CX Exiles, Otters Nivea and Ta’ Xbiex Amigos in the first Group of the BOV Waterpolo Summer League while Neptunes Emirates have been paired with Sirens Ritter Sport, Marsascala meat.com.mt and Valletta in Group B.

The draws were held at the ASA Boardroom by ASA President Joe Caruana Curran, Secretary General Martin Borg and BOV Chief Officer Peter Perrotti.
Caruana Curran said that clubs have been preparing themselves extremely well for this forthcoming league and that there were high expectations from all camps in this regard. He outlined some changes to the playoff system where this year the team who wins the First Division League would proceed straight to the final playoff while those who placed 2nd and 3rd would play three games to ensure who would be the finalist.

The ASA President explained that the Second Division would now also be played across three rounds instead of two. A season ticket of EUR 50 for all matches was also introduced and entry for match days was now set at EUR 5 while tickets could also be printed online before coming to the pool to avoid queues.

On days where three or more games are scheduled, the first game will start off  at 17:30 while on those days when two games are scheduled, the first game will begin at 18:45. Caruana Curran said that these new times were set to protect the players from excessive heat.

The first games which will be played on the 7th of June will be Sliema-Exiles, Otters – Ta’ Xbiex, Marsascala – Neptunes and Sirens-Valletta. The games will begin at 4:15CET.
