Neptunes survive scare to take 19th championship home

Sunday, September 5, 2010, 10:09

Neptunes Emirates overcame a stiff test yesterday evening to secure this year’s First Division league title, the 19th one in their history, their last one being in the 2007 season. Defending champions Sliema Mc Donalds were aware that nothing less than a victory would enable them to force a decider and possibly take the title for the third year running.

As expected, the first session was a mix of emotions with both teams, particularly Neptunes, missing a couple of clear goal opportunities with Sliema’s Meli being fouled out twice in a space of a few minutes, forcing Afric to change him. Brownrigg drew the first blood for Sliema but Neptunes managed to finish this session 2-1 up. Sliema came into the second session with all guns blazing, with Rizzo hammering in a powerful shot, Privitera beating Gouder from close range, Rath scoring a penalty and Kunac scoring a spectacular one times from a Rath assist. Sliema won this session 4-1 putting all the pressure on the Reds, with Afric urging his men to remain calm.

At the start of the third session Stellini was fouled out immediately with Brownrigg netting Sliema’s sixth goal, and adding to Marcoch’s woes. But the Blues gave Neptunes the chance to get back into the game, squandering too many man-up situations, with Lanzon lobbing the ball into the Sliema goal to ease off some of the pressure. David Camilleri made it 6-5 with a scorcher in the top left corner and an impressive flick by Gravina over Kunac made it 6-6. Coleiro made a point blank save off a Molnar flick, Vujasinovic hit the bar and then penalty on Molnar was converted by Steve Camilleri after Sliema had squandered yet another man-up. Lubrano’s attempt in the last few seconds hit the bar, sending both team into the final session with a 7-6 scoreline in Neptunes’ favour.

Neptunes had Jordan Camilleri fouled out and from the resulting man-up Sliema scored through Brownrigg, but Gravina made it 8-7 for the Reds with the most beautiful goal of the game, only to be fouled out a short while later. Coleiro saved a Lanzon lob but could do little to save a short range effort by Molnar. A Rath penalty gave Sliema a lifeline, to bring them within a goal of Neptunes, but Molnar made it 10-8 from a dubious penalty, sending all the Neptunes fans into jubilation with Gabaretta getting a final goal for Sliema for a final score of 10-9 for Neptunes.

Following the official presentation, all the Neptunes faithful headed to Balluta bay to continue their celebrations.

Lazon’s lob did not cross the goal line, gravina’s ‘impressive’ flick was both a counter foul and 2 meters and molnars penalty all came at a time when sliema were slowly clawing their way back in the game. The referees understand the game and know that a 1 bad decision at a crucial time is like 5 in the begining of the game. Sliema has every major decision taken against them.

If you describe Molnar’s 10th goal as coming from a dubious penalty decision, I can argue that a number of expulsions against Neptunes were very controversial, in the match against Sliema and even in the previous match against San Giljan. I do not think decisions were consistent at either end in both matches. But this is waterpolo and you have to accept the referees’ decisions whatever they may be. Congratulations to Neptunes. They showed they were the most prepared side under the guidance of an examplary coach who proved to be a shrewd tactician. As Spiteri J. said the boys deserved it.

A beautiful sporting spectacle. Both the players, and supporters were magnificent. A true show of sportsmanship which does justice to sport in Malta and erases the dismal scenes and barbarous behaviour of the few last weekend.

Well done Neptunes and well done Sliema you both can hold your heads up high.
