Neptunes hammer Sirens. San Giljan into the semis

Thursday, September 9, 2010, 11:26

Neptunes Emirates tore apart Karl Izzo’s Sirens Ritter Sport during yesterday’s Knock Out semifinal to end the St. Paul’s Bay side’s commitments for 2010.

The Reds found the back of the net no less than 23 times with Tamas Molnar scoring 9 goals followed by Stevie Camilleri with 5 goals. It was truly a walk in the park for Neptunes who could afford to rest their key players for the final throughout the last two session, when at half time the score already read 14-1 in their favour. Sirens managed some sort of reaction during the last two sessions but the damage had already been done and Neptunes ended on the winning side with a staggering 23-7 scoreline.

Toth and Aquilina propel San Giljan into the semifinals

A backhand shot by Hungarian Marton Toth gave San Giljan Firetech the pass to face Sliema in tomorrow’s First Division KO semifinal after beating Exiles Jet Services. Edward Aquilina had given San Giljan by equalising in regular time. Toth’s goal secured a slim 14-13 victory for Marco Risso’s side which was once again depleted due to a number of players still hit by suspension.

The game was decided in extra time after the full time score was 11-11. San Giljan once again succumbed to an Exiles comeback when they could not manage a five goal lead that they built up very early in the game.

San Giljan were also close to losing the encounter in regular time when a brace by Julian Rizzo Naudi gave them a 11-10 lead with just under 30 seconds left on the clock. But Edward Aquilina had other thoughts and fired in the equaliser with only a couple of seconds left to play, bringing out the grit and determination of the Giljanizi when it mattered.

The first of two extra time sessions finished in San Giljan’s favour through Paul Fava and Aquilina while Bonca kept Exiles within a goal of their opponents. In the final session, veteran John Paris made the score 13-13 but it was San Giljan who had the last laugh with Toth’s backhender to set up a semifinal with Sliema.
