Neptunes clinch President’s Cup – Valletta take GHGS Cup

Neptunes Grimaldi were the deserved winners of the President’s Cup when they defeated their eternal rivals Sliema Frank Salt 11-8 in a tight encounter.

Neptunes came out much the stronger team in the first session winning 3-0 with Niki Lanzon, Stellini and Molnar scoring for the Balluta team. The second session saw Sliema gain a two goal lead through Soler and Bronwrigg but Neptunes kept up the momentum through Jordan Camilleri and Clint Mercieca with Petkovic making it a two goal game and Hutton scoring in the dying seconds to make it 5-4.

The third session saw Neptunes regain the lead after Sliema had equalized through Hutton but goals by Biros and Niki Lanzon made it 7-5 for the Reds at the start of the final session. This was an exciting affair with the pendulum swinging one way or another but although Petkovic and Hutton scored twice, two vital goals from Steve Camilleri sealed an 11-8 victory for the Reds as well as the President’s Cup.

Valletta McDonalds 11 Marsascala MORE 7

Valletta McDonalds won the first honour of the Summer waterpolo season when they beat Marsascala MORE with the score of 11-7.

Valletta came out like a house on fire in the first session scoring five times without reply but Marsascala came back in the second session, shading it 3-2. The goals were mixed with Mock, Spiteri Staines, Korolija, Cordina and Rizzo scoring for Valletta while Marsascala replied through Mora, Marnitz and Cutajar.

The third session saw Valletta regaining supremacy where they won the session 2-1. Marsaskala won the final session 3-2 to make it a creditable result with the goals coming from Mora and Cutajar but it was Valletta who hoisted the GHGS Cup winning 11-7.

After the match, Valletta’s captain Simon Cachia was presented with the GHGS Cup by the association’s President Charles Camenzuli and council member, Mario Bonnici
