NDD refrains from reading out match fixing report in Executive meetingWednesday, October 31, 2012, 9:18
The Malta Football Association’s President Norman Darmanin Demajo has turned down a request by several MFA Executive Committeee members to read out the contents of two seperate match fixing reports which were compiled by Dr Adrian Camilleri the MFA’s prosecutor.
This move raised many eyebrows during yesterday’s Executive meeting whcih was scheduled at 1pm.
The Executive Committee of the MFA eventually provisionally suspended three local football players over various match fixing allegations.
Two separate cases in two different games have been mentioned in the report. The report highlighted the Premier league match Sliema v Hamrun match played last season (1-1), and the first division match Naxxar v Gzira played a month ago and ended (2-2). The Sliema v Hamrun match was played on 11th February 2012 whilst the Naxxar Gzira match was played on the 28th September 2012.
The players who have been suspended are Gaetan Spiteri in relation with the Sliema v Hamrun match and two brothers Jermain and Chris Brincat, the latter forming part also of the National Futsal team.
Police have confirmeded that criminal charges have already been issued in relation with the February game and a hearing in front of Magistrate Antonio Mizzi is scheduled for December 2012. The charges against the other players will be out soon. More people involved in the Naxxar v Gzira game case will be charged but the MFA has no jurisdiction upon these.
Julian Briffa is also involved in the Sliema v Hamrun match.
