National team triathletes in international races

Danica Bonello Spiteri and Keith Galea have recently returned to Malta after successfully participating in international competitions in Spain and the UK respectively.

Bonello Spiteri won her Age Group Category (25-29) and finished 5th Overall among 61 ‘age group’ women athletes in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Series held in the Casa de Campo Park in Madrid on Saturday 5th June. She covered the Olympic Triathlon (Swim: 1500m; Bike: 40km; Run: 10km), which was held in very hot conditions and over a hilly and highly technical cycle course, in a time of 2hrs:31mins.

Thanks to this excellent result, Bonello Spiteri has qualified to take part in the final Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU ‘Age Group’ World Championship scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, on the 8th September.

On the 24th April, Keith Galea took part in the Ashbourne Duathlon which is part of the UK Duathlon Series and which consequently attracted the best athletes in the UK. The Race, which consisted of a Run of 12km, followed by a Cycle of 40km and finishing with another Run of 4km, was held in the fantastic settings of Carsington Water, Nr Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Galea finished third in his Age Group (20-24) and 14th Overall in a time of 2hrs:16mins.

Three days later, Galea took part in the 17km Wolvey cycling Time Trial. Galea managed the best ever time trial of his young career, finishing 8th among 60 participants, in a time of 24mins:10secs, averaging a speed of 42.2km/hr on the course.
