National rugby coach, Damian Neill and his squad are in good spirits as they prepare to leave their training camp in the UK to travel to the Netherlands in advance of Saturday’s international against Holland – European Nations Cup, Division 2B.

However, due to this morning’s unexpected blast of volcanic dust from Iceland, all the UK’s airports are closed until at least 6p.m. this evening. Even then, it’s not certain when airport authorities will deem it safe to re-open. Fearing the worst, team manager, Danny Sacco has reorganised travel arrangements. The squad is travelling to Dover by coach, crossing to Calais, then coaching all the way to Amsterdam. With any luck the squad will arrive in Holland’s capital at midnight tonight – let’s hope they know their rugby songs!!

Before today’s drama, the squad has been training in Cirencester where excellent facilities were provided, staff have been extremely helpful and all equipment provided for training sessions. Cirencester RFC also made their pitch available and their team was of great help in providing opposition for one of the training mornings. “Training has been excellent and we’re all feeling upbeat and positive,” commented Steve Busuttil, touch judge.

Damian Neill has called up 23 players:

Dominic Busuttil (Captain), Joss Howland (VC), Malcolm Attard, Matthew Mirabelli, Matthew Camilleri, Nathan Gatt, Tom Pace More, Pete Bradley, Joseph Cutajar, Mike Bonavia, Rob Bonavia, Michael Whitney, Michael McCardle, Oliver Sacco, James O’Brien, James Finlason, Charlie Sammut, Alistair Livesey, Matt Garrett, Tom Holloway, Rob Holloway, Clayton Cassarr & Luke Watts.

Five new faces feature in the squad : Matthew Camilleri, Charlie Sammut, Tom Holloway, Rob Holloway, Alistair Livesey.

Team management include: Damian Neil, coach, Nick Warren, assistant coach, Danny Sacco, team manager, Steve Cilia, physio, Steve Busuttil, touch judge and Brian Dalton, MRFU rep
