National record by ASA relay team at Tal-Qroqq

Mark Sammut sets new age group record and short-course record for Rebecca Dalli.

There was an excellent start to the ASA Internationanal Age Group Swimming Meeting 2010 being held at the National Pool Tal-Qroqq as two records were broken in the first session held yesterday afternoon

The National Men’s Relay Team made up of Mark Sammut, Andrea Agius, Neil Agius and Edward Caruana Dingli broke the 4 x100 m medley when they clocked 4.07.21 to improve on their previous national record of 4.08.49 which the same four swimmers had done during their participation in the FINA World Championships held in Rome last July. The ASA relay team won gold in the event in which there were also participating the local teams of Neptunes and IASIS and the foreign teams of Windsor Swim Club of UK and Swimming Club Kreuzlingen of Switzerland.

By this new timing, the Relay Team erased the record held by SV Wacker Bughausen of 4.09.53 set in the ASA International Swim Meet of 2002.

During the first leg of this Relay event, Mark Sammut broke the Group D Age Group Record in the 100 m back when he clocked 1.03.13 to improve further on this timing recorded recently of 1.03.34 when he participated in the swim-off against a French swimmer in the recent Lyon International Swim Meet.

In foreign shores, the Sliema ASC Swimming team participated in the Reading Easter Meet held this week in the UK. Rebecca Dalli set a new short course record in the 800m free with a time of 10.51.91. Julia Zahra was also within the previous record with a time of 11.06.50. The previous record belonged to Simone Xerri De Carro set in January 1992 with a timing of 11.20.00.
