The Malta Weightlifting Association organised its second competition 0f the year at the Cottonera Sports Complex. An encouraging number of athletes took part in this event. The athletes were from five clubs which are Noble Gym, Centru Cottonera, Mcast Naxxar and Falcons.

A good number of records were broken in the Cadet Category. The Female Category was contested between Beatrix Galea who managed 74 points and Francesca Mercieca came close with 72 points. In the Male Cadet Category Rylee Borg dominated with 82 points.

The Boy’s Under 14 Section was won by Emmersin Bugeja with a lift of 75Kg followed by Malcolm Camilleri with a lift of 48Kg and Isaac Fava lifting 46Kg.

The Female Section was dominated by Nicole Gatt who managed a total of 93Kg. With this total she also managed to break nothing less than 10 National records. Marilyn Grech lifted a total of 82Kg and came second followed by Siobhan O’Sullivan.

Joran Farrugia dominated the Male Youths section when he broke 5 National records in the 94Kg Category. First place in this section was won by Thomas Farrugia with a total of 133Kg followed by Hayden Farrugia with a total of 128Kg and third came Ryan Borg with a total of 105Kg. It was unfortunate for Jean Zarb that he was unable to conclude the Competition.

The Men’s section was won by Noel Coleiro with a total of 229Kg followed by Rodmar Pulis lifting 210Kg and third place came Jovan Reljic lifting 195Kg. It was another unlucky turn of events that Matthew Muscat could not conclude all the lifts.

The Competition was run by Jesmond Caruana. Technical Officials for this Competition were Ramona Borg, Gayle Caruana, Cleaven Cutajar, Stephen Borg and Andrea Caruana.

This competition helped to prepare the athletes for the Association’s next Competition – The Malta Open. It is also in preparation for the upcoming Small Nations Games which shall be held in Luxembourg at the end of next month. The Team for this event has already been chosen and consists as follows; Noel Coleiro, RodmarPulis, Matthew Muscat Inglott and Jovan Reljic accompanied by Coach Stephen Borg.
