MVA John Bugeja Cup: Fleur-de-Lys Office Group Win Game 1 With A Great Comeback.Thursday, September 20, 2012, 12:30

A great season opener in the men’s John Bugeja Pre-season Cup Game 1 organised by the Malta Volleyball Association took place on Saturday the 15th September. Fleur-de-Lys Office Group made a magnificent comeback beating Aloysians Defenders, three sets to two to take the lead in best out of three matches.
This year both teams have strengthened their squads to challenge the current championsVallettafor the championship. MVA men’s season 2012/13 promises to very challenging and exciting.
Aloysians acquired ex-national setter Keith Mercieca, new libero Simon Borg and a new Russian A. Laptev. On the other side of the net Fleur-de-Lys Office Group acquired an Italian, Valerio Savio where his professional experience will surely help to upgrade his team’s abilities. Mark Duca was given a libero role in the absence of David Cutajar.
Aloysians started very well and with a solid block and good defence managed to win the first set 25-20 . The second set was similar to the first one were Fleur-de-lys could not turn in favour various attacking opportunities and therefore Aloysians with fast counter attacks especially from Andrew Attard and Laptev managed to secure the second set 25-21.
In the third set Fleur-de-lys player/coach Silvan Gauci replaced setter Ryan Borg and Aristar Borg substituted Eric Sciberras. With a great fighting spirit Fleur-De-Lys Office Group managed to get back in the game, winning the third set 25-19. This set was crucial for the match as Fleur-de-Lys gained confidence and upgraded their level of play. Attacks from centrals Maaerten Haegdorens and Gaston Camilleri together with improved teamwork achieved the fourth set 25-16 and therefore a tie-break was needed to determine the winner of game 1.
The tie-break was a one way story as Fleur-de-Lys served well and maintained their level of play with powerful attacks from outer spikers Valerio Savio and Aristair Borg , displaying a very good fighting team spirit, completing their comeback and securing the fifth set 15-7 and winning game 1.
