Last Sunday saw game two of The Seniors Baseball Leagues, with Qormi Sting and Qormi Devils making their season debuts.  The two teams faced the Mavericks and the Mustangs respectively, who both won their first games at the season opener two weeks ago.

In the Seniors 2nd Division the Qormi Sting got off to a quick start against the Mavericks, scoring in two runs against starting pitcher Nicolae Marcus.  Sting added another run in the 2nd inning and four more in the third to take a seven to nothing lead against the Mavericks.  The Mavericks finally saw a hole in Sting’s defence against starting pitcher Ronald Sillick and scored 5 runs in the final inning, however their late rally was not enough to avoid the Mavericks’ first loss of the season.  Sting won their season opener 7-5, to take first place in the 2nd Division standings.

The Seniors National League followed the 2nd Division game, with the leaders, Mustangs hosting the Qormi Devils.  Mustangs starter Kevin Spiteri started off quite promising, just needing nine pitches to finish the first inning.  In the bottom of the first, the Mustangs were all over Qormi’s Kenneth Bellizzi, driving in eleven runs in just one inning.  Spiteri continued his steady pitching, who was backed up by his defence; including a 5-4-3 double play with ended the 2nd inning.  The Mustangs continued their dominant performance, by scoring a couple of runs in both the second and third inning, with the fifteenth run being enough to win the game under mercy rule.  The 15-0 score gave Spiteri his second victory of the season, and also his first career no-hitter.

Both games were officiated by Trixie Van Der Kooi, who became the first female to ever umpire a national male baseball league in Malta.
