MSSF President hails William Chetcuti’s performances

The MSSF Press conference was organized today at Bidnija to commemorate the positive results at The ISSF World Cup USA 2012 and to launch The 3rd Malta International Double Trap Grand Prix 29-04-12

The MSSF President Savior Portelli gave a brief overview of the carrier of our shooters and the long way that MSSF came from it’s inception. The President mention the first foreign encounters by Maltese shooters that were the first steps towards todays results. He also mentioned that today our shooters have learnt how to compete not only locally but also in International events among top shooters.

The president said that William Chetcuti showed the world that he can reach highest places on podium in The ISSF World Cup Beijing 2011 where he won the Gold medal and The Olympic Quota place for the London 2012. This year’s ISSF World Cup series started with a positive note when in Tucson USA William won Silver and Nathan placed 4th amoung the best shooters in the world. He mentioned the positive feedback from The ISSF for the Maltese shooters from such a small island to both qualify for the finals. The ISSF also commented on Nathan’s success that he hade history in shooting sport when he is the youngest shooter in the World to qualify for the barrage finals at an ISSF World Cup. The President mentioned that William and Nathan in Double Trap and Stephen Vella, Dr. James Galea and Frank Scorfna will be taking part in The Pre Olympics in London April 2012. The President also mentioned that the shooters must be encouraged financially to continue with their sports and mentioned that it is a pity that we loose athletes like Clive Farrugia after winning a medal in GSSE. The MSSF will also organize a Trap Grand Prix in June. This is encouraging for sports tourism.

The President Mr. Portelli said that this year The 3rd Malta International Double trap Grand Prix that is going to be held on the 29th April 2012. He also thanked the main sponsors MSV LIFE, BOV, Blueline and KMS for their support.

This year there was a bigger response from International shooters for The Double Trap Grand Prix amoung the Italian national squad Danielle di Spignio, Francesco D’Aniello, both Olympic medalists, Chianese, Marco Innocenti, Davide and another 12 Italian shooters. From Sweden Hakan Dahlby will also be here for the third conscutive time together with Simo from Finland. From Wales, Mr. Chestercopp will also be taking part for the first time.

The MOC President Mr. Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco praised the success of Wiliam, Nathan and Jimmy in USA and thanked The Malta Shooting Sport Federation for their work to achieve these results. The MOC president that shooting sports showed that although we are a small island we can still make it amoung the best in the world. He said that this is the first time that we won the quota place and promised that Malta will be supporting William for LONDON 2012. he said that The MOC already started talks with IOC for new scholarships for the next four years.

The KMS Chairman Mr. Bernard Vassallo said that it is an honour for The KMS to support the 3rd Malta International Double Trap Grand Prix 2012. He said that it is important that we do not put unnecessary presure on William because William already proved himself. Mr. Vassallo said that Nathan is on the right track for future results. He also thanked Jimmy for his success that brought up both William and Nathan.

William Chetcuti thanked for all the support and promised to do his best and encouraged the public to come to Bidnija on the 29th April and support the local shooters.
