The 2017 edition of the Mediterranean Bank Cup was launched last night by the Malta Rugby Football Union at a Press event at its Clubhouse. . The Cup is the second of the two main local Men’s Rugby Competitions, which begins this weekend with the Swieqi Overseas RUFC meeting  Stompers RFC on the pitch at Marsa.

MRFU President, Steve Busuttil, opened the event, welcoming Mediterranean Bank representative, Ruth Micallef.  Ms. Micallef commented on how Proud Mediterranean Bank was to be a sponsor of Maltese Rugby and how happy they are with the results and progress of the game both on and off the Pitch.  Mr. Busuttil thanked Mediterranean Bank for their support and went on say that Sponsors like this are the backbone of the local sport.  Without the help and support of its Sponsors, the MRFU would not be able to function and achieve the targets it has set for itself in the coming years.

This year’s edition of the Mediterranean Bank will take on a different format.  With only the top 4 local teams participating – Swieqi Overseas RUFC, Stompers RFC, Kavallieri RFC and Falcons RFC – the tournament will also see the introduction of a Bonus Point system.  The Bonus Point System is intended to encourage more consistent play as well as promote core values with the intention of furthering the level of the Local Game.

This weekend will also see the start of the Women’s 7 aside League.  This is the main competition for all Local Women’s teams and looks to be yet another exciting competition.

Vice-President and Chairman of the Youth Committee, Joseph Borda, discussed the start of 2017’s youth events, promoting the MRFU’s Sunday School of Rugby, the centre piece of the MRFU’s initiatives to expand youth rugby Locally.  Mr. Borda also thanked the government for its continued support and allowing the Union to enter schools to bring rugby to more young people.  He also mentioned how the Union aims to hold a Rugby Tournament for Schools, government, church and private, towards the end of the scholastic year.

The event concluded with Mr. Busuttil thanking all who attended for their time and inviting all to attend the competitions held at the Marsa Rugby Pitch every weekend, starting this Saturday.
