Another successful racing weekend by a Maltese, this time in Go Kart racing by the 15 year old Maltese participant Nicky Gauci at ‘Circuito Internazionale Di Triscina” in Sicily on the 4th September. Nicky Gauci competed in the 125 Rotax Max Challenge. This was his 6th race in this year’s championship.

Participating for the first time on this track in Triscina. Sicily, Nicky Gauci, driving his No.22 Go Kart, battled against the other Sicilian teams and placed 3rd in the official qualifying with a time of 50.939 secs which was just 0.043s away from the 1st place at 50.896s.

In Race 1, starting from 3rd place on the grid, Nicky Gauci out performed his competitors to the first corner attaining the lead. It was no easy race, with his rivals hot on his heels and constantly on the attack, Nicky defended his position well all the way to the end to complete the first race in 1st place.

In Race 2, Nicky Gauci started on pole but lost his place to 2nd in the first lap. He raced in this position for most of the race dropping down to 3rd close to the end. Unfortunately, though an error at the start resulted in him making a false start for which he incurred a 10sec penalty that affected his final classification at race completion.

Nicky Gauci was complemented for his performance by the members of the other competing teams, who commented that it was a pity that he incurred the penalty and that he deserved to be on the podium, a place he hopes to be on in his next race.
