Melo Zammit – Wins National Autocross Championship 2013/14

On Saturday afternoon 31st May ‘Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi’ organized the last Autocrss Championship race and the 7th Motocross event all sponsored by Pasta poiatti. All together 47 competitors regisred on the day. 11 of these were Gozo drivers and riders. The Motocross events started at around 4.30pm. Both Class A and B were exciting to follow. Class A was dominated by Clayton Camilleri followed by Paul Muscat both on KTM bikes. Edward Ciantar on a Kawasaki placed 3rd on the day.

 

The three (3) heats of Class B were dominated by Ludvic Muscat riding a 250cc KTM. He was closely battled by Gozitan rider Etienne Bigeni on a Honda 250 and young Kyle Camilleri on his Suzuki RM 85cc bike.

 

The Autocross Heats started at about 7.30pm where a larger number of drivers registered for this event. The newly adopted points system resulted in the National Championship be battled to the last race. During the Heats only Vince Farrugia (VW Polo) amd Josef Grech on a Fiesta won all their three heats and secured their place on the Final A grid. Christian Mark Galea on a Fiat Ritmo, Philip Joe Vella on his Vauxhall Nova, Gordon Johnson on a Peugeot 205 and Patrick Cassar on his Opel Corsa also started the Final A race.  Soon after the Start a light downpour of rain showers changed the track surface. Yet, Vella took the lead and started building a marginal gap too. Johnson and Galea followed till the 3rd Lap when Johnson was forced to slow down due to sudden loss of power. Emotion now tipped the scale as Farrugia, Galea and Grech were battling for the Runner-up position. Galea followed Vella’s Nova while Farrugia held back of Galea and ahead of Johnson. Later Cassar and Grech retired due to mechanical failures.

 

Class B Finalists were Jason Martin on a Volkswagen Polo, Josef Abela on a Vauxhall Nova, Ryan Scerri, Melo Zammit, Andrea Scicluna and Malcom Borg all raced on Opel Corsa. Fron the start  Abela raced his Nova ahead of all present while Scicluna and Martin followed close behind. In less than two Laps Martin passed Scicluna who was also overtaken by Scerri. Borg who started from 6th place started narrowing the gap to Scicluna. Later on Scicluna touch the car of Borg in a critical place on track and caused him to loose control and overturn his Nove. The race was Red Flagged for security measures while further action is expected to be taken soon by the Executive committe. With a result to stand Abela won the race ahead of Martin and Scerri.

 

The Gozo Autocross Championship was won by Dominic Zammit while the day event was won by Marvin Grima on an Opel Corsa followed by Joseph Vella and Joseph Agius both on Ford Fiesta.

 

The National Autocross Championship 2013/14 sponsored by Pasta Poiatti and supported by Lucas Oil was won by Melo Zammit. Runner up is Vince Farrugia on a VW Polo 1400cc.

The winners were presented with throphies by Hon. Chris Agius MP who was present on site during the event. Hon Agius thanked the ASMK committe and members for the organisation exhibited during the events.
