On Saturday the MCA Winter Wallop Cricket league continued with the reigning Champions Melita Bees taking on the Marsa Magpies. The Magpies were strengthened with the inclusion of Sam Aquilina.

The Magpies batted first only to put up a modest score of 117 runs after the twenty overs were up. Tony Azzopardi was a shining light scoring thirty nine runs from the allotted thirty balls which included three boundaries and a six. Aquilina’s inclusion paid off with him scoring a valuable twenty four runs from twenty two balls which included a six. John Rusher steered the innings and held up an end towards the late stages of the innings and scored eighteen runs along the way which included three boundaries. Andrew Naudi made thirteen runs and four other batsmen made four runs between them. There were nineteen extras otherwise the scorecard would have been a sorry state for the Magpies.

Not taking anything away from the bowling of the Bees which was pretty good to keep the Magpies at bay. Paul Bradley was the main wicket taker with two while, Daniel Galea, Tim Wheeler, Joy Ghoseroy and Derek Ali all took a wicket each.

As one would imagine the Bees made the required runs on the first ball of the sixteenth over. Ewan Prezens who has represented the Sweden National team and playing his last game on the island faced that one ball and had it sailing over the boundary for six, he would not have wanted anything better then winning the game in that manner and will be a memorable shot to leave with. Earlier Frank Spiteri put the Bees in the winning position making fifty three runs from twenty five balls which included nine boundaries and a six. The bowlers were under siege and had no reply. Even Earlier the opening partners of Tim Wheeler (sixteen runs) and Matt McKeogh ( seventeen runs) put the bees on the right track.

For the Magpies Tony Azzopardi, Ali Hamza, Malik and Will Nicholls all took a wicket each.

This was the final game of the first round, with the win Melita Bees are on top, Krishna Cobras second and Marsa Magpies third.

Next Saturday the final session of the Sunoco Cricket Academy/Nursery for this year will be fro 9:00 till 10:30am.
