One of the few Maltese young players playing abroad is Matthew Robert Gauci who plays with Lowestoft Town FC, was recently selected to represent Suffolk Regional Team in the UK Regional League after he caught the eye of Suffolk coaches with his excellent performances on the left flank for his club both with the Youths and with the Reserves. UK Regional League is considered to be of a high standard one, with most of the players playing semi-professional and professional with a host of top English clubs.

18 year old Gauci who also represents Malta U19, has been in England for the past 3 years following trials in UK with the likes of Norwich City. Suffolk Regional team has already played 2 games in the League, but unfortunately without grabbing any points as they were defeated against Northfolk 1-0 and in the second match against Bedfordshire 2-1. It’s interesting to note that Matthew Gauci is the only foreign player selected in the Suffolk squad and one of the few players who have played all the 90 mins in both matches. The versatility of the Maltese starlet saw him playing in many positions during his time in UK. For Suffolk he was drafted as a left back while with Lowestoft Town FC he played as a left midfielder, central midfielder and even as a second striker.

Gauci is expected to play an important role for Malta’s squad in the UEFA U19 Championships later in October.
