Matthew Asciak wins BOV Malta Tennis Men’s Masters 2013

Maltese tennis player Matthew Asciak confirmed his position as the person to beat in Maltese tennis by retaining the BOV Malta Men’s Masters 2013 Championship.


Asciak was the top seed in this end of year tournament that sees the top 8 ranked Maltese players participate in this week-long prestigious tournament.


Players were drawn into two groups taking into account existing National rankings and tournament was organized on a round robin format with semifinals and final.  Asciak led group one with Raphael Sammut leading Group 2.

In Group 1, Asciak won top spot beating Miguel Galea 6-0 6-0, Denzil Agius 6-1 6-0 and Mark Gatt 6-0 6-2. Denzil Agius placed second in Group 1 beating off the challenge of 3rd placed Mark Gatt 4-6 6-1 6-2 in a tightly fought and tense encounter.


In Group 2, Bradley Callus claimed first place after winning his encounters against  Raphael Sammut, Matthew Cassar Torregiani and Mark Schranz.  Raphael Sammut finished runner up in Group 2.


The semifinals saw Matthew Asciak taking on Raphael Sammut whom he beat 6-2, 6-3 in a enthralling match.  Bradley Callus advanced beating Denzil Agius 7-5, 6-2 in another exciting semi-final and thus earning the right to face Asciak in the final.


The final was played at the Gordon Asciak Tennis Academy Indoor Courts at Marsa Sports Club on Saturday 30th November. Matthew Asciak retained the title by beating Callus 6-1, 6-2. Although the score reflects an overwhelming victory for Asciak, the 95-minute match tested both players’ skills and endurance.


Following the final, John Paul Abela, Manager, Media and Community Relations at Bank of Valletta presented the trophies to the winners and runner-up in the presence of Dr. David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation.


Dr Farrugia Sacco thanked Gordon Asciak for the use of the Gordon Asciak Tennis Academy Indoor courts for this tournament, as it would have been impossible to keep to the tight schedule of the tournament due to the adverse weather.   Dr Farrugia Sacco further noted that “The Bank of Valletta Men’s Tennis Masters has established itself as a major tournament on the local circuit where the top talent battle it out for the last tournament of the year.”


Congratulating Matthew Asciak and all the participants in the tournament, John Paul Abela said, “it is a pleasure to see such dedication among the players, and also a sense of sportsmanship that was evident throughout the tournament.
