Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese impress at Malta Open Tennis Championships

MATTHEW ASCIAK 12 Consecutive times Malta Tennis Champion.

ELAINE GENOVESE Champion for 8th Time.

Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese were crowned Malta Tennis Champions.

Matthew won the title for the first time as a 15 year old in 2005, made it a record 12 consecutive title, beating his parents record Gordon Asciak and Helen Nee Degiorgio.

On the way to the final Matthew Asciak overcame V.Schaller, B De Laat, B. Carlotti and Denzil Aguis in the semi-final.

16 year old Miguel Galea, Malta u 18 Champion faced his coach in the final. To book his place in his first Malta Open Final, Miguel defeated Mark Gatt, Matthew Griscti, Ben Farruguia and Omar Suzuka.

Asciak dominated the final against Galea who is still young and inexperienced with the score of 6-0 6-0.

Elaine Genovese won the title for the first time in 2007 and this was her 8th title. Genovese overpowered Emma Mallia and Brenda Galea to make it to the final. Genovese faced 13 year old  Russian based in Malta, Alina Shcherbinina.

Alina defeated Krysta Dimech to face Genovese in the final.  Elaine was too consistent and experienced for Alina  and won the final  6-2 6-3.

In the Men’s doubles final Matthew Asciak/Bradley Callus retained their title. They were awarded  a walk over in the final against Miguel Galea/Omar Suzuka. Suzuka was unwell.

The presentaion was held on court no.1 at the Marsa Sports Club. The President of the Malta Tennis Federation Dr. David Farrugia Sacco together with the chairman of the Marsa Sports Club Mr. Godwin Borg, rewarded the trophies to the winners.

The Malta Open was sanctioned by the MTF, organized by the Marsa Sports Club  and sponsored by Gatorade
