Southsiders suffer first defeat this season

Today 1,520 spectators attended the Victor Tedesco Stadium to watch the encounter between Marsaxlokk and Valletta which brought to an end matchday 6 of the BOV Premier League 2010-11. Before this match  Valletta and Marsaxlokk were the only two teams who were unbeaten. After the 90th minute whistle, Valletta remained the only team unbeaten after six matches and  are still occupying the first place in the league table with a total of 14 points whilst Marsaxokk remained in the fourth position with 9 points.

This was the 27th encounter so far in the Premier League between these two teams. Valletta have won 16, Marsaxlokk have won 8 and they drew 3 times. Patrick Curmi coached 15 times against Valletta and he won only once, lost 9 and drew 5 times whilst Jesmond Zerafa faced Marsaxlokk as a coach three times where he lost once, drew once and won for the first time today.

Jamie Pace and Kevin Sammut now Valletta players used to play for Marsaxlokk FC whilst Rumen Galabov is an ex Valletta player.

Referee Adrian Azzopardi controlled Marsaxlokk FC 18times, with 7 wins for the Southsiders, 6 draws and 5 defeats. Valletta, on the other hand, were controlled by this referee 22 times with 8 wins, 6 draws and 8 defeats for the Citizens.

1t Half:

12min: Roderick Briffa’s long range shot just missed Reuben Gauci’s post.

15 min: Brazilian player Denni Dos Santos missed the target from inside the penalty area.

18min: Valletta 1-0: Kevin Sammut opened the score of this encounter thanks to a fine run by his team mate Roderick Briffa’s low left cross and the fourth personal goal this season for the ex-Marsaxlokk player.

31min: Twenty nine year old Roderick Briffa with a 25m freekick missed the target for the Lilywhites.

38min: Stand in captain Jamie Pace’s powerful freekick skimmed Reuben Gauci’s post.

At the moment, Jamie Pace and Clive Brincat are the only players on the pitch with 3 yellow cards. Gareth Sciberras’ yellow card today is his second of the season.

2nd Half:

49min: Valletta 2-0: Dyson Falzon scores the second goal for the Citizens and his personal second goal this season. The former Mosta winger left sided shot beat Marsaxokk’s goalkeeper in the left top corner.

56min: Marsaxlokk FC coach Patrick Curmi decided to substitute Martin Deanov with Julio Alcorse. Martin Deanov was always in the starting line up this season but every time he started he never concluded the game till the final whistle.

66 min: Andrew Hogg kept his goal post clean after a point blank save on Dylan Kokavessis and then Trevor Templeman hit wide from an ideal position.

 75min: Gilbert Agius back on the pitch as Jesmond Zerafa substituted Dyson Falzon with the national player. Gilbert’s last appearance was on September 17th against Hibernians where he replaced Jonathan Caruana.
