Iceland’s volcano leaves it’s mark on cricket series in Marsa

Over the weekend the Journeyman C.C came to play against Marsa C.C with a slight problem, more than half their team were stuck in England due to flights which have been cancelled due to the Iceland volcano. The Marsa team supplied the players needed to make up their team and the two game series still took place.

On Saturday the Marsa team batted first. The Marsa team were bowled out for 126 runs. Javed Shah top scored with forty four runs including four fours and one six. Malcolm Crabbe scored twenty three runs,Ronnie Sacco sixteen runs and Justin Brooke thirteen runs. For the JourneyMan Pete Keenlyside was the main wicket taker with three while Howard Morland, Simon Redfern and Gordon Hewitt all took two wickets each. In a surprise reply the visitors were bowled out for 101 runs. John Grima top scored with twenty five runs, Andy Lenard sixteen runs,Humphrey Keenlyside fifteen runs and George Agius twelve runs. For the Marsa team Malcolm Crabbe and Ronnie Sacco were the main wicket takers with three each while Joy Ghoseroy took two. Marsa win the first game.

On Sunday the Journeyman C.C batted first with John Grima opening the batting and kept on his good form from the previous day and scored forty nine runs before being bowled. Humphrey Keenlyside and Sam Aquilina both scored thirty nine runs and Andy Naudi top scored with sixty five runs not out including two fours and three sixes. The tourists totalled a fine 199 runs from their allotted overs. For Marsa the only wicket takers were Tony Azzopardi (two wickets) and Pierre Naudi (one wicket).

The Marsa reply was steady but was never in control. Sarfraz Ali opened the batting and scored eight runs, Joy Ghoseroy scored thirty seven runs and Andy Lenard thirty five runs. A couple of quick wickets and the game turned back in favour with the visitors. A quick twenty four runs from Tony Azzopardi brought back the game in favour of the home side until he was bowled. This left a workload for Nowell Khosla who was the only recognised batsman. He played one of his best ever innings and won the game of the last ball of the innings making sixty nine runs not out.. For the Journeyman John Dabner was the main wicket taker with four wickets. The Marsa team win the series two to nil.
