Marsa hosts a Spanish team for the first time

Over the weekend the Marsa C.C hosted probably the first team from Spain , Intellectuals C.C from Alicante in a three game series which commenced on the Friday Afternoon.

The Friday game was a twenty over game where the home team batted first and made a moderate 136 runs from their allotted overs. Puneet Gupta in fine form made fifty one runs, Derek Ali forty runs and Jonathan Tucker twenty runs. For the Intellectuals Andy Grantham took two wickets while Tony Prior, David Keeling and Thom Clarke took a wicket each. In reply the Intellectuals could only muster up 91 runs, Laurence McGarry top scored with twenty two runs and Tommy Keeling made eighteen. For the Marsa team Robert Krishna and Gordon Hewitt took two wickets each while Puneet Gupta and Sarfraz Ali took a wicket each. Marsa win the first game.

On Saturday the Marsa team batted first in the forty over game and posted a very decent total of 270 runs. The Riordan brothers Joshua and Chris opened the innings and both went on to make fifties. John Grima made thirty nine runs, Nik Stagno Navarro made twenty eight runs, Malcolm Crabbe twenty five runs and Bikram Arora twenty runs in the run fest. For the Intellectual bowlers who all had a hard day, Benny Mierre managed two wickets while David Keeling took one. In reply the visitors went down the road of trying to make the runs quickly and paid the price of being bowled out for 101 runs.

Laurence McGarry top scored with thirty two runs, Benny Miree seventeen runs and Andy Grantham sixteen runs. The Marsa bowlers bowled well with Gordon Hewitt and Nik Stagno Navarro both taking three wickets each. Malcolm Crabbe took two and Bikram Arora one. The Marsa team take an unassailable lead in the series.

On Sunday the Intellectuals were hoping to win. Again the Marsa team managed to win the toss and batted first. This time a better bowling performance from the team from Alicante kept the local side to 180 runs from their allotted overs. Simon Lavendar batted well for fifty runs, Ewan Prezens made his presence felt with thiry six runs which included two sixes and three fours, Vinod Ramakrishna playing in his first game made twenty three runs while ever improving John Rusher made twenty one runs. For the visitors Benny Mirre took three wickets, Tony Prior took two, while Andy Grantham and David Keeling took one each. In reply the Intellectuals were bowled out for 99 runs. Laurence Mc Garry again was in the runs top scoring with eighteen. Tony Prior made thirteen and Andy Grantham ten runs. The Marsa bowlers did well again. Gordon Hewitt again had good figures taking another three wickets, Ramakrishna, Joy Ghoseroy and Sarfraz Ali all took two each and Prezens took one.

Next Saturday the Summer league continue with the Marsa C.C taking on Overseas C.C. On Sunday the two teams meet again but this time it will be the women’s team playing.
