Marsa beat Oakhill in cricket thriller

Over the weekend Marsa C.C took on new touring team Oakhill C.C from the United Kingdom.

On Saturday the home team lost the toss and were asked to field. In an astonishing bowling effort the Marsa side bowled out the visitors for fifty three runs where the high scorer for the innings was extras with thirteen. The main wicket takers for Marsa were Robert Krishna and Mike Caruana who both took three wickets each. In reply the Marsa opening batsmen Mark G.Sacco (thirty runs not out) and Samuel Aquilina (twenty five runs not out) guided the home team for the win in the ninth over.

With the visitors not being to happy with their showing a twenty over game was played. This time the home team batted first and totalled 157 runs in their twenty overs. Ronnie Sacco played a marvellous innings hitting eleven fours and one six on the way too top scoring with seventy six runs. Joy Ghoseroy scored twenty six runs and Derek Ali twenty nine runs. For Oakhill Neil Engerran took two wickets while Jacques Basson and Gareth Fergus took a wicket each.

Oakhill’s reply was much better than earlier in the day. They totalled 114 runs of their twenty overs. Engerran made twenty runs , Basson seventeen runs and Edward Haskey thirty five runs. For Marsa Sarfraz Ali and Derek Ali were the main wicket takers with two each. Marsa go two nil up in the series.

On Sunday Marsa won the toss and elected to bat in the forty over game. John Grima (twenty seven runs) and Andy Lenard (forty four runs) opened the innings. Nowell Khosla made twenty four runs, Javed Shah top scored with fifty three runs and Justin Brooke made twenty runs. For the visitors Engerran was the main wicket taker with two while, Andrew Welch,Jacques LeBars and Fergus took a wicket each. The home side totalled 189 runs from their allotted overs.

After a bad start losing five wickets for fifty one runs Jacques Basson went in with a mission to turn things around andthat he did. He scored an incredible ninety four runs including eight sixes and four fours. When his wicket fell his side needed twenty two runs to win with five overs remaining and two wickets in hand. Andrew Welch was there and doing well and ended on thirty one runs not out. With two overs left it was up to the local bowlers to stand up. Andy Lenard bowled the penultimate over and took a wicket but gave away six runs in the over. Nowell Khosla had the task of bowling the last over. He managed to bowl the batsman and win the game for the home side. Khosla was the main wicket taker along with Adam Krishna and Andy Lenard who all took two wickets each. Marsa win the series three to nil.
