Last Sunday the Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi (ASMK) successfully organized the sixth event of the ASMK Pasta Poiatti 2019/2020 National Autocross Championship with 11 competitors. On the same day the second edition of the Ladies Demolition Derby was another successful event with the participation of eight competitors.

Jean Paul Grech on his Peugeot 106 won the Autocross’ Class A Final race. He was followed by Andrew Pisani on an Opel Nova, Noel Zammit on his Fiat Punto, Kurt Aquilina and Karl Micallef both on Opel Corsa and Nicolai Aquilina who withdrew earlier in the race because of mechanical faults.

In the Autocross Class B Final, Justin Buttigeig on his Opel Nova dominated this race final followed by Paul Formosa on a Fiat Uno, Michael Galea on a Ford Escort and Jerome Peplow on Kia Avella.

The Ladies Demolition 2020 line up was made of Panthea Butler on an Opel Corsa, Nadette Magro on a Kia Avella, Brenda Bongailas on a Peugeot 205, Francesca Schembri, Jessica Magro Butler and Michaela Sammut all on Volkswagen Polo cars, Maronia Mallia on a Lada Samara and Carol Bowell on a Fiat Uno.

First they did two parade laps as is normal tradition to start each Demolition Derby and right from the start the competitors started hitting other with spectacular neat technical bumps as allowed by the rules of the game.

After about an hour of battling Butler and Mallia Magro who for almost 15 minutes were seen to trick each other and try to give the terminal blow to their other competitor’s car to stop her from the race.

Although the car of Malliia seemed to be still more powerful, that of Magro Butler had the rear body parts very well damaged with one rear wheel without a tyre and another wheel was completely missing. Despite this situation the car of Magro Butler and that of Mallia were still mobile and each tried to find the opportunity to give their opponent the mortal blow to the other car. Here the two cars were being inspected for driver’s safety after each blow.

Soon Mallia’s car was risking to stop running due to loss of coolant from a badly damaged radiator but the game went on. Suddenly both drivers drove their cars to a head on collision and both car engines stalled. Mallia successfully started her car and moved back while this blow resulted in the car of Margo Butler to terminate any chance for a win. Mallia was declared as the winner of this second edition of the Ladies Demolition Derby. Both finalists greeted each other on the roof of one of the their cars.

During the presentation, all competitors were presented with participation bronze medals by the ASMK’s President who also thanked the male competitors who prepared the cars for these women. He also thanked the female competitors for their sporting exhibition. The Vice President and the Secretary General presented the trophies to the winners.
