Marie Claire Aquilina and Etienne Bonello successfully returned from the Granfondo San Cataldo in the central village of San Cataldo in Sicily earlier this month. The race was part of the Sicilian Mountain bike Granfondo championship, a 40km off road route including nothing less 1075m of vertical ascent through forest road, rocky terrain and technical sections.

More than 100 participants from all over Sicily took the start of what turned out to be a grueling race in very hot and humid conditions which saw a number of riders throwing in the towel due to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Marie Claire Aquilina had a brilliant ride to win the ladies’ race to the surprise of the race organisers.

In the meantime Etienne Bonello claimed the third spot of the podium behind Pro Team Hiker duo Mirco Farnisi and Michele Riggi. Jason Vella and Gerard Said finished fourth and fifth respectively. The trip was made possible with the collaboration of Greens Super Market, BBB Bike Parts, The Cyclist and Real San Cataldo MTB club.
