National team coach John Buttigieg has yet to decide the final 18 man squad that he will take up with him in Israel for the opening EURO 2012 qualifying game scheduled for Thursday 2nd September. Australian based defender Manny Muscat is the only player who theoretically can rest his mind to make the trip to Israel as he has already been approached by the Malta FA to make the necessary travel arrangements.

Addressing a Press Conference on Friday Buttigieg said that all the 23 players he has short listed so far are all in good form. He added that he is very satisfied with the outcome of the recent training sessions. The Malta coach also remarked that he would ask his players to improve the level of concentration and maximize the team’s level of football during the away game to Israel. He commented also that he is working very much on ball possession which will be fundamental in Thursday’s group opener game.

Buttigieg lamented of the fact that the majority of his players have a lack of match practice since we are just at the eve of the new local football season. “I would have preferred that the game away against Israel and the home match against Latvia would have been played at a later stage of the year” Buttigieg said.

In his final comments the ex-Malta central defender confirmed that he could not call up Justin Haber because the latter has fractured his hand and John Hutchinson was unable to make the trip.

Bjorn Vassallo the new MFA CEO and Mark Muscat the National Team’s Media officer gave details about the home match that Malta will play against Latvia on Tuesday 7th September.

Vassallo revealed that the entry to the South Stand will be free of charge. He said that this was one of the recent initiatives by the MFA to try to get as much people as possible at the Stadium. In this regard the MFA has offered all the South End Core fans and other supporters free access to this part of the Stadium. The first 4,000 people to go in will go for free and will join Malta’s official supporters branch. He added that free tickets have been handed also to local football and rugby nurseries. Swimming, Waterpolo and Basketball children’s schools have also been given free tickets to come and enjoy this EURO 2012 qualifier match.

Bjorn Vassallo added that all local football Clubs will be handed 10 free tickets each to either sell or give out to their sponsors for this match. The MFA is therefore giving out EUR150 worth of tickets to each Club, this was one of the promises made by Norman Darmanin Demajo in his Presidential election campaign, a promise that is now being fulfilled concluded Vassallo.

At the end of the Press Conference Louis Agius the South End Core mentor was presented with a number 12 Malta FA official Givova shirt by Mark Msucat and Bjorn Vassallo on behalf of the MFA.

The below is the list of 23 players that are currently being considered by Buttigieg which will be eventually trimmed down to 18 prior the team’s departure to Israel via Cyprus on Monday afternoon.
