Thursday, 24th April, will see a selected team from the Malta Weightlifting Association depart for San Marino to represent our country at the European Small Nations Tournament. Having won silver in the past two years running, pressure is on as the competing nations include hosts San Marino, Cyprus, Iceland, Monaco and Luxembourg. The Malta team will also be participating in the San Marino Open; against powerhouse Germany, Wales, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, Israel, Belgium, and Italy. The Malta national team, on this occasion, will include veteran Noel Coleiro, the young Rodmar Pulis and the Serbian-born Jovan Reljic, all three of which have extensive experience at the international scene. Also included will be the youngest lifter in the team, Kieran Mifsud (14), a promising athlete. The head of delegation as well as national coach, Jesmond Caruana, will be leading the campaign, while Ramona Borg has been selected for the duty of International Technical official of the competition. Apart from the fact that the Malta team is defending its silver medal from the previous year, the event has added importance as it also serves as qualification for the Commonwealth Games, to be held in Glasgow later on this year.

In addition to this, Stephen Borg will depart for Ciechanow, Poland, on Saturday 26th April, to participate in the European Youth Championships, having been selected by the European Weightlifting Federation for the duty of technical official. With this, a somewhat impressive addition to the list of achievements for Maltese weightlifting will be the departure of Nicole Gatt and coach Mark Farrugia to Poland in order to participate in this championship. This will be an important event for Gatt as this is a qualification event for the youth Olympic games to be held in Nanjing China next August.
