Maltese Mountain Bikers lived up to expectations in Sicily

Maltese Mountain Bikers once again left their mark in Sicily at the recently held Etna Marathon, considered to be one of the most fascinating mountain bike races in Europe and which attracts some of the top professional riders on the mountain bike scene!

The Maltese contingent was made up of Marie Claire Aquilina, Etienne Bonello, , Clive Ebejer, Justin Gauci, Ramon Grech, Stephen Grima, Mark Micallef, Patrick Scicluna, Jason Vella, Christian Zammit, Mark Zammit,

With perfect weather conditions, the riders had only to contend with the brutal terrain conditions that these races are known for.

Riders Ramon Grech, Justin Gauci and Marie Claire Aquilina competed in the grueling 76km marathon race. Aquilina, who is undoubtedly the queen of local cycling narrowly missed a podium place when she finished in fourth place overall and second in her category

The rest of the riders took part in the 46km Granfondo race course, which saw around 450 riders compete on a course which included a vertical gain of 1,560m.  Veteran cyclist Patrick Scicluna, representing FRM Team Sicilia, competed in the Master 4 category which consisted of 76 riders. Scicluna finished in third place and 37th in the overall classification.

Notable performances were registered by Etienne Bonello (6th in Category, 29th Overall), Jason Vella (8th in Category, 36th Overall) and Clive Ebejer (7th in Category, 47th Overall).

The Race was valid for points in the UCI Marathon point as well as the Mediterranean Challenge which  consisted of ten races all held in Sicily.  This race attracts some of the top European Riders and Scicluna has competed in four of the races, which included the Noto Granfondo, Etna Extreme, Marathon dei Nebrodi, and the Etna Marathon. At time of print, Scicluna’s ranking was 14th overall in a field of over 250 riders.

The Malta Mountain Bike Association will be in action on Sunday 6th October from 8:00am  onwards in Selmun for the penultimate race of the 2019 Trustmoore Cross Country National Point Series. For more information please visit www.maltamountainbike.org.
