Maltese kickboxer Jesred Piscopo is the new European Champion in the Semi-Pro Lightweight category, after winning the title last Saturday during the 18th Gladiators event which was attended by close to 1,000 people.

The World Kickboxing Network PRO/AM European title was contested at the Corradino Sports Pavilion during Gladiators Fight Night 18, during which Piscopo fought for the title against Italy’s Guliano Lai. The fight was supervised by Emil Irimia, sent to Malta by the WKN specifically for this title.

The Kickboxing and K1 event last Saturday was one of the largest ever in Malta, with the participation of no less than 60 athletes from 10 different clubs, both those based in Malta as well as those from countries such as Northern Ireland and Italy.

The event, which kicked off at 4.00 pm with the childrens’ competitions, spanned over 9 hours, with the participation of Maltese and foreign Amateur and Semi-Pro athletes. The event came to a close with the professional fights by Keith ‘Speed’ Azzopardi and Shaun Falzon, followed by Jesred Piscopo.

Keith Azzopardi won his fight against an athlete from Sardinia, where he studied his adversary in the first round and proceeded to attack in the following rounds, remaining true to his nickname ‘speed’. Shaun Falzon lost his fight against another tough adversary from Sardinia, and despite getting knocked out in the first round, Falzon fought on through all rounds until the end.

Gladiators Fight Night 18 was a success, not only because it provided an opportunity for Maltese athletes to practice their sport and even clinch wins for Malta, but also for bringing together athletes from different countries and making a name for kickboxing in Malta.
