The Maltese senior female national volleyball team is undergoing its final preparations for the European Volleyball Championships (Small Countries Division) that are being held in Malta between the 11th and 13th June 2010.

As part of their preparations, the team has played a series of friendly matches against a Sicilian Under 18 team from Modica in the past days.

Malta will be playing a round robin tournament against Ireland, Luxembourg, Iceland and San Marino and the fixtures for the Maltese team will be as follows:

Friday 11th June at 1:00pm
Malta v Ireland

Friday 11th June at 8:00pm
Malta v Luxembourg

Saturday 12th June at 5:30pm
Malta v Iceland

Sunday 13th June at 3:30pm
Malta v San Marino

All games will be played at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The strongest teams in this edition are expected to be San Marino and Iceland who won the silver and bronze medals respectively during the past GSSE that were held in June 2009 in Cyprus. Luxembourg had placed last in Cyprus last year, while Malta hadn’t featured in the competition.

Past edition

The last time that the Maltese female team played in the European Championships was in May 2008. On that occasion Malta had lost in straight sets to San Marino but managed a very good win against Iceland with a scoreline of 3-1. In their last game, Malta succumbed to a more experienced Cyprus team thus finishing off in third place.
