Maltese baseball talents for Japanese experience

Five young Maltese boys will be going on an adventure that not many children their age experience. Danjel Aquilina, Max Borg, Sami Elamin, Gabriel Grixti and Nicholas Micallef, along with coach Charles Attard, will be attending the 20th Annual World Children’s Baseball Fair, being held in Tokyo, Japan from July the 29th to August the 6th.

The Malta Baseball & Softball Association (MABS) has been invited to the World Children’s Baseball Fair, one of the most prestigious baseball events in the world. This is the second time that MABS has been invited to this fair, as a group of Maltese children had also participated in the World Children’s Baseball Fair of 1994. MABS president Mario Debono sees this recent invitation by the World Children’s Baseball Foundation as a perfect opportunity for these young athletes to experience such an event during a time where MABS is using all its efforts to promote the sport of baseball amongst children in Malta and Gozo.

Danjel, Max, Sami, Gabriel and Nicholas have been selected amongst a good number of other young ballplayers who this year have participated in the Cadets League organized by MABS. They have now been preparing for this event for the last two months, where they been practicing weekly at the Mellieha Sports Complex.

American Major League’s home run king Hank Aaron and Japanese baseball legend Sadaharu Oh founded the World Children’s Baseball Foundation and its annual fair in the interest of promoting baseball to children ages 10 and 11, and providing an opportunity to develop international friendship, goodwill and cultural understanding amount the youth of the world. Children from all twenty-three countries, including Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands and the United States will be participating in this year’s event. Participants will be able to learn baseball techniques and skills from professional coaches of the International Baseball Federation.

The Malta Baseball & Softball Association would like to thank the Mellieha Sports Club and Sportsmania (Gozo) for their support while preparing for the World Baseball Children’s Fair in Tokyo, Japan.
